143..US VS THEM
I'm sure like me, you sometimes get confused. Paul says one thing and the other disciples, Peter and James, et al are saying something else. It's true, and for a good reason. Each has been assigned a diferent mission.
The original disciples were sent to Israel, whereas Paul was separated, by God,to go to those who worship many gods, pagans and teach them that there is but one god.
In order to understand what is intended for you, the time and the audience must first be known. Paul tells us that we must "correctly cut the truth".
Simply put, if you are not a jew, then Paul is speaking to you! Of course this doesn't preclude "jews" from knowing and believing,
Between the jews, the original apostles and Paul..a ”Johnny come lately”, there was in fact somewhat of a conflict between the two factions. Thus the saying “Rob Peter to pay Paul”.
Peter and the others were disciples of earthly Jesus, and they taugt what He taught, and used His resurrection as proof that He was the son of God, and what He taught was “Gospel’.
Paul, on the other hand, taught what was he received DIRECTLY by the Spirit of Jesus Christ. He did not know Jesus as a human.
Now, there’s so much stock placed in Peter being in Rome, as "proof" that the Roman Catholics is the "true" church . But, Peter as the “rock” went to Babylon, because the main body of the dispersed jews were there. The other disciples scattered throughout the known world, seeking to convert other jews into the way of Jesus, and along the way, convert pagans.
Upon departing the second time to the heavens, Jesus the Christ directed his disciples to go to Israel and spread the word.
Let me make clear that both Paul and Peter et al were jews. They didn’t think it was a new “religion” in which they were “members”. They were jews and they were each convinced that this “ truth" was a new way of worshiping God, as taught by Jesus.
“Christian”is just a common term used today to lump all those who believe in Christ.
But, in no way would they call themselves “Christians”, because back then this was a derogatory term, probably used by observant jews , meaning a group of "crazies", followers of that Jesus, crucified like a common criminal, who believe that he is the Christ.
I don’t believe that the original apostles did away with the jewish holy days. BUT, instead of animal sacrifices, I imagine on those days they substituted a ceremony by honoring the meaning of each “day”, by celebrating the “supreme sacrifice” And, of course, they would celebrate the sabbath, weekly.
Understand this is just conjecture on my part, but it does seem logical that they would carry over the old ways and adapt them to the new.
Paul, on the other hand was directed not to honor any day, including the sabbath, so I expect he celebrated with other believers on any day that they got together. Because, he tells us that every day is “special” to God.
So now, we’re beginning to get an idea of some of the differences between the two followers of Jesus.
The main difference was that the original disciples proselyted converts. And circumcision was the sign that these were proselytes.. "chosen people" . It goes back to Abraham and God’s directive that jews would be circumcised…males, a physical sign that they were chosen by God as special. Why special? Because they worshipped God..a single God.
Originally that was a bone of contention between Paul and the others, because he didn't insist on circumcision, and those who became “believers” were not proselytes, just members who belonged.
This was settled once and for all, when Paul returned to Jerusalem and faced James and Peter and the rest, and it was determined that Paul could continue to convert as he was instructed.
There was no “physical” sign that separated the women, which is kind of odd, in that “jewry” is passed on “maternally”. If your mother is a jew, you are, ethnically a jew..it makes no difference what religion your father possesses..and you can’t be part jewish..you either are or you’re not.
You have to admit that it is a clever way of maintaining the race..a father may be one thing, but you must always have a mother..paulnbob
