18.FIRST JOURNEY
Between the period CA 46-48 CE (AD), Saul journeyed to Asia (Asia Minor), from Antioch by way of Cyprus.
It was in Cyprus that Saul took the name of Paul (Paulus). His reason for changing his name is not known, but I would surmise, it was because he wanted to be known by a Greek name to allow his presence and message to be more universally accepted. Also, it could be as a tribute to the Roman Pro-counsul who approved his message.
There was a certain sorcerer named Barjesus (son of Joshua), who also went by the name Elymas (wise one), who attached himself to the Roman Pro-counsul, Sergius Paulus, boasting of his magical powers. When Paulus summoned Saul and Barnabas to explain his teachings and the message of Jesus, Barjesus tried to interfere. Then ensued a test of divine power between the two and, naturally Saul won out, causing Barjesus to lose his sight.
Paulus was impressed by what he saw and learned and whether or not he became a "believer" is not known, but he permitted Saul, now Paul to teach wherever he wished on the island.
Paul is defined as "small". In my play, ALL THINGS TO ALL MEN, I choose to use the word "little", and then say in a self-efacing manner of Paul's.."And I am the least of His apostles."
He landed in Perga, in Pamphylia, a swampy area, mosquito infested. here's where I took dramatic license again, in an effort to explain the "splinter in his flesh", by implication, saying he contracted malaria with accompanying description. From there moving quickly to Galatia and then proceeded to describe what happened there.
Gentle readers that's all for now, because I believe that some hidden forces are at work trying to delay and impede my typing..bobnPaul
