Let me tell you about my play, ALL THINGS TO ALL MEN..The Life of St.Paul, formally entitled SAU-PAUL, the play in which God had a hand in..RE: VIDEO, GOD'S MESSENGERS.
When I realized that Paul's truths were that of mine and all Gentiles and enlightened Jews, I felt like telling it to the world. Should I join the others on Hollywood Blvd and stop people wandering by and tell them how I feel and what I believe? No, I'm not that outgoing. I tried GIVING away tickets to TV shows in Hollywood without much success.
I'm an actor, I said and after watching a one-man play about Father Damien, Leper priest, I decided to write one about Paul and bring his truths out through drama. In the process of preparing, which took a little over a year, both in the writing and initial presentation, after going through two directors, I was ready.
Prior to that first presentation, with my first director, I presented one act before a handfull of ministers, from various churches that I called, to create interest and get some bookings. From this, I obtained a couple of promises and I returned to the "drawing board", finished the play and started rehearsing in earnest.
Oh, I should tell you about my very first attempt to create interest in my idea. I asked my friend, Mike who was my very first director while I was in the Army, to attend my acting out the scene from "the stoning of Steven", the one with which I intended to begin the play. I set the performance by a creek in King's Canyon, near Fresno, California. It was only a five minute scene, but he was imressed enough to encourage me to continue with my idea.
My first presentation was made in a church of the Wide World Church Of God..a cult under Herbert Armstrong, in which I was then a member. Even in rough form it went well and I received the first of many pastoral letters of comendation.
My first paid presentation..$100, occurred in 1979. Since that time, the play was presented over 1100 times, throughout the US, Hawaii and Alaska, and in Israel, England and Ireland.
One presentation in Israel was at the Ecce Homo building, wherein the Nuns of the Notre Dame of Sion resided, and where I spent ten exciting days behind the walls of Jerusalem. What made this a particulary memorable performance, was that the Sisters were French and the Mother Superior interpreted as I went along.
I should mention, after I became friends with DV Gokhale..called Gokhu for convenience, he became my third and last director, and provided the performace with the professional look it now possesses.
Remember, I said that the play was intended to bring the "truth" to those who were not taught the truth in their churches. So, it came about that the truth was revealed, couched in the drama.
My venues, quite naturally were christian institutions, churches and schools, the very churches in which the 'truth" is not kinown. In order to obtain bookings, I made countless phone calls, followed by thousands of form letters over a 20 year span..1979-199. Fortunately, I was only questioned once about my "church" and I responded that I was a member of the Savior of All Fellowship..in which I currently belong, .
I was both producer and actor, and in obtaining 1100+ performaces, you can imagine it took , at least as many as five time that number that were contacted multple times. The churches ranged from Pentecostal, through "traditional"Protestant churches, as well as Roman Catholic. I have no idea how many form letters were sent, but there would've been three, minimum for each performance, not counting those sent where no presentation was made.
It was a very satisfying period in my life. One that would be nearly impossible for me to duplicate today, because of technical telephonic inovations.
Even though I have no idea how many people "saw the light" through the presentations, I feel that I have done my best to please God, otherwise He would've let me know..paulnbob
